In grid-iron football in the US there is a type of defensive play called a blitz defence. Blitzing is a tactic used by the defence to disrupt pass attempts by the offense. During a blitz, a higher than usual number of defensive players will rush the opposing quarterback, in an attempt either to tackle them or force them to hurry his pass attempt. As the immigration policies of our government spiral out of control and no national politicians willing to save local communities. Local groups have to fight back themselves. This is the situation we find ourselves in now in Galway city as local media and national government keep relentlessly pushing their offensive refugee strategies. Today, Rahoon fought back and won.
The government attempted to horse-shoe 32 unvetted men into a 6 bedroom house in Rahoon in Galway but fortunately their efforts have been stymied by Conor Harlow and local residents committee that didn’t exist one week ago. A friend of Conor’s, who was working as a tradesman in the proposed new refugee accommodation centre gave the father of two the heads up last Thursday. Proposals were in place to start moving the men into the house this week. Not much time to formulate a defensive strategy to protect the neighbourhood but he and they managed to devise one. I don’t have time to write about all the subjects that need attention so I am posting this story as an audio conversation directly from the site of the Rahoon protest.
My day started in Dublin, at a press conference in Buswell’s hotel, across the road from the Dáil. I thought I’d be writing about the important subject matter at the heart of this presser this evening but as I drove home someone sent me an audio clip of an interview with a local Galway county councillor, Noel Thomas on Galway FM. It was something the host Keith Finnegan said, in his passive aggressive, condescending way, at the outset of this interview that set my blood boiling regarding the unlimited immigration into the country and now of Galway city and county.

No, actually, we don’t Keith and if we have to take down Galway Bay FM to prove that point I guess that is what we’ll have to do.
So, I pointed the car in the direction of Rahoon and luckily bumped into the organiser or head coach of Rahoon’s blitz defence. Conor Harlow is of old Galway stock coming from the Shantalla area of the city originally before moving into Letteragh and Rahoon with his young family. The audio is a little blustery in spots due to it being taken outdoors on my phone but you can hear everything pretty much clearly as he lays out how Rahoon residents quickly fought back against the sneakiness of their government and at the moment of writing this are winning.
