On Monday morning, I met Jenni McGinley from Kinvara in County Galway for a walk and a chat about her memories of the pandemic - to the backdrop of chirping birds. Jenni is one of the many unsung heroes around the country that organises gatherings and events that help keep everyone connected. Three years ago, Jenni set up the local “ Stand in the Park “ group at Coole Park in Gort. The group meets every Sunday morning at 10am in the walled garden - come hail, rain or shine - thanks to Jenni’s efforts. In previous episodes the names of John Waters and Thomas Sheridan cropped up as people that my interviewees looked up to and whose contented they trusted. In this episode, Aisling O’Loughlin’s name is highlighted by Jenni in the same regard.
Besides her work as an SNA, Jenni is a poet and publishes her work here on substack ( link below) and she also kept a journal of her experiences during the pandemic. Samples of both her journal and poetry are part of our conversation. In our patch of the world, whether it be Christmas parties, birthdays, secret gatherings during Covid, or organising trips away - Jenni is the one at the heart of planning them and always with a smile on her face. Alongside her husband Ben she hosts monthly gigs in her home highlighting the talents of local musicians.
